I recently attempted my latest interplanetary mission to Eve recently, but forgot Aerobraking is then used to circularize the orbit. If the atmosphere is thick enough, a single pass through it can be sufficient to slow a spacecraft as needed. However, aerobraking is typically done with many orbital passes through a higher altitude, and therefore thinner region of the atmosphere. Strange you should mention it. I did some aerobraking around Eve last night. This is a very dark picture of my lander probe before the first pass. There were about 10 passes in total, starting at 82km, and ending at about 75km, after which I was no longer in orbit.
